ZooM G7 / G9 ...Good and Bad

  If you don't like it..

Object : I don´t like
I have the zoom g7 since last year, and i´m so regreat for buy it, í still haven´t achive a good distorsion patch, may i´m not enought patient to configure a good one, but later two hours configuring i dont know what sounds good or sounds bad, usually every thing sounds bad. I find the zoom g7 that gives u a very electric sound, no natural. My amplifier is a cate V50, and its distorsion is not very heavy actually is very light, but i think that everybody is agree with me when i say that is imposible to achive a better one with the zoom g7, and if some one arent please send me the patch.
I think that is a very poor multiefects, in the way of the distorsion, i tought that it would work better due to de valvles, but werent.
If someone is interested in buy one despite mi critic, i´m selling the mine haha.
Bye fellows

Object : Foot Switches Die
Had it for sometime,
Footswitches are not reliable!!
They die pretty easy!

Till now only WD40 resurrects them else dead! Or alive every once in a while.

But the Unit lets you reconfigure almost everything so it's still an awesome unit!

Object : Foot Switches Die
I have the same problem with my G9. I use contact cleaner purchased from Radio Shack. I just spray it under the button of the foot switch with the tiny straw to get it down into the switch it`self.

Object : G9 ... what I don't like about it.
Well ... I don't like the sound of my unit. After few months I still can't get good clean tone. Everything is distorted no matter what I do with tubes controls or gain control. Distortion is better ... I think it sounds natural ... and it is ... good for blues or classic rock rhythm, but still not what I'm looking for solos, and I think I won't be able to find it here. But I do not regret buying it even though I keep turning knobs more then playing with it. So when I want to play ... I reach for GT-10. I tried to find good patches here, and I see they work for you. It's great ! But not for me. I know every guitar sounds different, every amp or fingers make difference ... but I lose my patience. And one more thing - try to turn wah with the expression pedal ... well it is not good advertisment for Zoom factory. And I wonder did really nobody see it in zoom design office ?

Object : Anyone wants to buy it?
After few days after my last post I'm 95% decided to sell it. Now it sounds different every time I turn it on ! Even when I switch paths and return to the last one IT SOUNDS DIFFERENT ! Sometimes it has too much high tones or it lacks gain. So I keep turning controls over and over. I'm tired of it. Good effect.

Object : i m not sure
i really found good sounds on my gt9, I really think that sounds good but after my GT9 be lighted for half an hour or so I think their sound becomes more distorted, but when I turn on my recent patches the distortion sounds amazing. I'm not sure that's the only thing I dislike about the pedal, ah! the wah is disgusting

Object : Banks appear to want to change on their own
I have a G9 and it seems that when i'm playing a certain certain patch, lets say U3 patch 1, I will look down to the board and see the red bank/patch indicator light blinking as if to want to change bank/patch ... I'll be on bank 3 then it will start blinking bank 0 ... So in the middle of playing i have to use the bank up/down to go back to where i was at .. If you understand what i'm trying to explain here and you are having this problem, please give me some info before i through my G9 of a bridge... By the way, i did a master reset hoping this would solve the problem, but as you can see, it didnt ....

Object : Important thing about Modeling
You must have an amp that has a very CLEAN tone, that said, you can have an amp that does everything under the sun but for any "modeling unit" such as the G9 and others you will be best off getting the Cleanest possible tone from your amp first. if you turn your amp up louder and it distorts so will the unit you are using, I use 2 Hartke 60c amps in stereo and it sounds great. I also found that the "tube/SS" and "tube/boost" settings sound a lot better if they are set around 2 to 3, these knobs can really make a difference in the clarity of your tones so you may want to do some heavy experimenting on them.

Object : G7 Linear volume pedal
Am I the only one to find unusable the volume based on a linear resistor ?
Controling certain parameters with the unique G7 pedal is fine. But for volume this has to be done with logarithmic resistors.
All the volume response is in the last 10% of the course...
That's a shame they did not think to convert the pedal values for every parameter needing non linear response.

Object : Hey Karjala
I had the same problem, was getting bad distortion from trying to play along through the headphones, I thought it was the patch settings but it turns out it's the tube settings, if you set them at or below 10 o'clock (bout 3 I think) it should clear it up.

Object : How 2 edit manually : Sully
in the manual it explains "Changing the Sound of a Patch" pg.25
although I found the G9 quite complicating for manual editing in manual mode I am doing this because I feel it will help me
edit when I am not able to connect to my PC and enjoy the ease of editing from my PC, it talks about [Patch Configuration]
from Input to [Comp]-[wah/efx1]-[ext loop]-[znr]-[pre-amp]-[eq]-[cabinet]-[mod/efx2]-[delay]-[reverb] to Output.
if you want to copy patches from text to G9 (or G7) you need to start differently than it states here but this does come
into play, also there is the Effects module keys illustration after the "Patch configuration" illustration in the manual.
it shows what keys are for what function or effect.
It is important to note that the Tube settings play a big roll in how your unit will sound and using different devices and
set-ups can change the way it sounds so you need know this and experiment and maybe document your settings you use with
different things, PA's, AMPS and headphones etc...

(note: pedal settings and others may have drop down boxes which give you a wide choice of options)

1. overall PatchLevel (use pre-amp Level knob to change)
2. enter the TOTAL function ( button found far right just below the pre-amp, 11th or Last button) it shows
"TOTAL:tempo BPM = XXX" (where XXX = number of beats per minute)
using the knobs on the left under the display will change these parameters
the first knob (bank/type) allows you to change much more than just the Tempo.
Tempo (using second knob to adjust tempo, 3rd knob moves to FUNCTION1 (read manual for
indepth details), 4th knob for FUNCTION2
3. AmpSel - this is ChannelA or ChannelB (what ever you chose when saved will come on first)
4. AMP TYPE knob in pre-amp section (pre-amp shows in display with EQ and Amp type)
ON = is chosen when saved - if you wish the other channel be default chose and save again
DZ Clean = amp type knob
50 = GAIN knob
15 = TONE - adjust by AMP TYPE and then TONE knob (2nd knob under display )
84 = LEVEL knob
POST = adjust by AMP TYPE and then PRE-AMP CHAIN knob (3rd knob under display )
NOTE: Amp Channel A and B are edited as selected, also Aco.Sim type has TOP and BODY rather than GAIN and TONE.
5. EQ_A and EQ_B, the EQ is in the EFFECTS buttons under the PRE-AMP section and ON when lit (6th button)
each button is configured respectfully { on, 0, 4, 0, 0, 2, 0 }

ON - on or off is indicated by the EQ button under the BASS knob in PRE-AMP section
0 = BASS set at 0 db and changed by using the BASS knob
4 = LOW-MID set at 4 db and changed by using the LOW-MID knob (4th knob under the display)
0 = MIDDLE set at 0 db and changed by using the MIDDLE knob
0 = TREBLE set at 0 and changed by using the TREBLE knob
2 = PRESENCE set at 2 db and changed by using the PRESENCE knob
0 = HARMONICS set at 0 db and changed by using the HARMONICS knob (5th knob under the display)
NOTE: EQ_A and EQ_B are selected by which CHANNEL (A or B) is selected
6. ZnrA (and B) has 3 noise reduction settins upon pressing the ZNR, THRESHOLD, NOISEGATE and DIRTYGATE (effects 4th button)
ON = on or off is indicated by the ZNR button just under the LEVEL knob in PRE-AMP section
ZNR = one of three types described above
3 = the THRESHOLD level of noise reduction (I find if over used can cause more digital distortion)
7. Ext = EXT LOOP is for use with external effects, the EXT LOOP is in the EFFECTS buttons under the PRE-AMP GAIN knob(pg.41)
off = EXT LOOP set to off, and changed by pressing the EXT LOOP button again
80 = SendLevel and changed by using the TONE knob (2nd button under the display)
80 = Ret Level and changed by using the PRE-AMP CHAIN knob (3rd button under the display)
0 = DRY LEVEL and changed by using the LO-MID knob (4th button under the display)
8. COMP - COMPRESSOR effect [on, type + 4 parameters] adjusted respectfully, NOTE: types have different parameter names.
Rack Compressor and Limiter used knobs like Threshold, Ratio, Attack and release
ON = on or off is indicated by the COMP button just under the AMP TYPE knob in PRE-AMP Section (1st button)
Compressor = 1 of 3 types, and changed by using the TYPE knob (1st button under the display)
6 = sensitivity or (sence), may be Threshold, changed by using the TONE knob (2nd button under the display)
Fast = (or SLOW) attack, may also be Ratio
9 = Tone, also may be attack or release, changed by using the PRE-AMP CHAIN knob (3rd button under the display)
70 = LEVEL, changed by using the LO-MID knob (4th button under the display)
9. wah = WAH/EFX1 - second effects button under the Pre amp section, getting into multi parameter settings so here you need to
study more as I don't want to have to go into great detail in this tutoril. these effect can have many different options
WAH/EFX1 = Type of effect changed by 1st THROUGH 5th knobs under display.
1st knob effect type 2nd though 5th knobs parameters in respective order (I assume).
10. Cabi = Cabinet - 7th button of the effect
MicType = Cond & Dyna, changed by using the TONE knob (2nd button under the display)
MicPos1 = 0 1 or 2, changed by using the PRE-AMP CHAIN knob (3rd button under the display)
Depth = 0 1 or 2, changed by using the LO-MID knob (4th button under the display)
11. mod - MOD/EFX2 = 8th effects button, this is the same as using the WAH/EFX1 (STUDY)
MOD/EFX2 = Type of effect changed by 1st THROUGH 5th knobs under display.
1st knob effect type 2nd though 5th knobs parameters in respective order (I assume).
12. Del - DELAY = 9th effects button, and this is the same as using the WAH/EFX1 (STUDY)
Delay = Type of effect changed by 1st THROUGH 5th knobs under display.
1st knob effect type 2nd though 5th knobs parameters in respective order (I assume).
13. Rev - REVERB = 10th button in effects, and this is the same as using the WAH/EFX1 (STUDY)
Reverb = Type of effect changed by 1st THROUGH 5th knobs under display.
1st knob effect type 2nd though 5th knobs parameters in respective order (I assume).
14. Arrm - ARRM is (Auto-Repeat Real-time Modulation) PLease read the Manual to make adjustments manually. this is mainly unused.
TOTAL/FUNCTION button in the Effects, 11th button then used the TYPE knob under the display (1st button) then select ARRM
ARRM = Type of mod/efx changed by 2nd THROUGH 4th knobs under display.
2nd knob mod/efx type 3rd and 4th knobs parameters in respective order (I assume).
0 = (I assume) the patch type (in this case off) (1 would equal the "Volume" type
0 = minimum range of the pedal or wave type (0 to 100),(I assume)
255 = Maximum range of the pedal or wave type (0 to 100),(I assume) also I think the parameter 255 tells the G9 arrm is off
0 = WAVE TYPE - the first wave type in the list, 1 = the 2nd wave type etc..
0 = SYNC = some notation setting from 0 to 20 (sets the waves closer (0) to farther apart (20)
15. Pedal1 = using the Pedal1 setting button just under the TYPE knob under the display, alternately you can press the
TOTAL/FUNCTION button then use the TYPE knob under display to get to...
P1-1= ???? (???? I believe this is the first parameter only the setting below is in code that I cannot seem to find what
each are but I THINK I might be right that first "1" is a volume code in the PEDAL1 parameters below, (TYPE, like volume,
rate, X-fade, etc.. ) using 2nd knob (tone) to change the control target TYPE (parameter 1), knob 3 changes the minimum
pedal setting (the 7, parameter 2) and knob 4 = maximum (the 96, parameter 3), knob 5 is parameter 4 and it enables or disables
the "switch" funtion, (I have no idea how these really work at this time, in the "Target-2" parameters the 116 = AMP:HotBox:Gain
this is how I know that they are using codes for the first parameter. Pedal2V is similar to Pedal1 and Pedal2H is the same only
they do not have a 'switch".

Pedal1
1 ( 1, 7, 96, disabled )

2 ( 116, 2, 97, enabled )

3 ( 137, 6, 85, enabled )

4 ( 221, 10, 34, enabled )
